Nature's Neighbors: Bugs & Snakes at Buck Lane Rental
Our 3-acre property in rural Ola, Arkansas, offers peaceful seclusion amid fields, woods, and natural beauty—which means sharing the space with local wildlife, including insects and snakes. Most are harmless and essential to the ecosystem (e.g., controlling pests or pollinating), but Arkansas's humid climate supports abundant bugs year-round. Encounters are part of the rural charm, and with simple precautions, you'll stay comfortable.
Common Insects
Rural spots like ours have plenty of bugs, especially in grassy, wooded, or watery areas near the pool/hot tub.
Mosquitoes: Very common, especially near water or after rain. Peak Season: Late spring through early fall (May–October), worst at dawn and dusk. Tips: Bring and use insect repellent; wear long sleeves/pants in evenings; avoid standing water.
Chiggers (tiny mites causing itchy bites): Thrive in tall grass and brush. Peak Season: Late spring to early fall (June–September). Tips: Stay on mowed paths; wear closed shoes and tuck pants into socks; shower promptly after outdoor activities.
Ticks: Found in grass and woods; check for them after hikes. Peak Season: Year-round (mild winters), highest March–October. Tips: Perform daily tick checks (legs, arms, scalp); wear light-colored clothing for easy spotting.
Other frequent visitors include spiders (mostly harmless), fire ants (avoid mounds), and wasps (near flowers). Black widow spiders are rare but possible in outbuildings.
Snakes on the Property
Arkansas has about 39 snake species; only 6 are venomous, and sightings are rare. Most are shy, beneficial (eating rodents/insects), and avoid humans. On acreage like ours, you might see one crossing paths or basking—always give space.
Active Season: Mainly April–October (they brumate in cooler months); more visible spring/fall, nocturnal in summer heat.
Common Non-Venomous (Harmless & Helpful)
Black rat snakes: Climbers that control mice.
Garter snakes: Small, striped, near grass.
Hognose snakes: Known for dramatic "playing dead."
Venomous (Possible but Uncommon in Yell County)
Copperhead: Most likely here; camouflaged with brown bands, in leaves/rocks.
Timber Rattlesnake: Larger, with rattle; in wooded areas.
Western Diamondback Rattlesnake: Rare, in rocky spots.
Safety Tips: Wear closed-toe shoes outdoors; watch your step; use a flashlight at night. If you see a snake, back away slowly—do not approach or harm it.
Wildlife sightings add to the authentic Arkansas adventure! For identification help, guests can visit the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission website or app.

Exterior Cameras
For the security of our guests and the protection of the property, Buck Lane Rental is equipped with exterior security cameras.
These cameras monitor only the outside areas of the home (e.g., driveway, entrances, and perimeter).
No cameras monitor indoor spaces or private outdoor areas where guests have a higher expectation of privacy (such as the pool or hot tub areas). The pool is and rear entry is within the camera view. The camera has been lowered to keep the hot tub out of view.
Footage is recorded for security purposes only and is not actively monitored unless needed for an incident.
A dedicated monitor in the living room displays live feeds from the exterior cameras, allowing guests to view the property's surroundings for added peace of mind.
This setup helps ensure a safe and secure stay while respecting privacy. Thank you for your understanding!
